We will continue our mastery approach to mathematics developing reasoning skills, problem solving and fluency. We will begin by looking at a range of multiplication and division methods before moving onto fractions. The fractions unit will include, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions as well as calculating fractions of amounts. This will then lead into looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Finally, moving on to look at interpreting data looking at range of graphs and tables Children need to continue to learn their times tables up to 12 and we will continue to focus on a mathematical concept each week in arithmetic to consolidate their understanding.
We will begin the term focusing on a balanced discussion. Our genres of writing covered include: persuasive writing, a narrative wishing story, as well as looking at different forms of poetry, where the children will be given the opportunity to write reverse poems, haikus and poems which contain metaphors and other types of figurative language. Within these units, children will be taught the tools needed to write successfully in each genre as well as developing their SPaG skills in these lessons. Reading will be promoted through daily guided reading, daily story time sessions as well as a weekly reading comprehension. We will also be focusing on speed and fluency.
This topic is all about Earth and Space. We will use books and the Internet as well as being visited by a scientist and explore the universe through participating in a workshop within the Wonderdome. Follow up lessons will build up on the knowledge gained and children will be able to explore their understanding more. On this day, the children will also have opportunity to explore constellations and be ready to become stargazers and planet spotters. This will be a fantastic day with many interactive activities taking place.
We will start the term by developing a chronological knowledge of world history and explore the humans interest in space resulting in the 'Space Race' and beyond. We will explore the achievements of scientists, mathematicians and engineers throughout time and how they impacted then and the world today.
In the second half term the children will become history detectives and explore how we know so much about the Tudors. We will look at the chronology of technology and how it has helped shape and change our ideas on what happened in the past and how it can help shape our understanding today.
The children will be using an atlas and online resources to locate the continents , countries and cities of different countries 'Space Programs'.
The children will develop their skills using watercolours and acrylic paints. They will also be developing their gridding skills. The majority of our work will be influenced by the Japanese art of Manga and animation especially the films of Hayao Miyazaki. The children will be developing and reinforcing their use of artistic vocabulary with a focus texture.
The children will have the opportunity to design and create in the second half term a Tudor House. They will design, tinker and make during a parent workshop.
Our topic this term is ‘Earth and Space’. We will be looking at how the Earth moves in relation to the Sun. They will be able to explain why there are there 24 hours a day. Why there are 365 days in a year, why shadows are formed and the reason for different seasons.
The children will have the Wonderdome to inspire their thinking and knowledge.
PE kits should be in school at all times. Children will take them home at half term to be washed and ready for the next half term. The kit should include: a white t-shirt, royal blue shorts and black PE pumps. Plain black or navy jogging bottoms can be worn in the winter. PE kits can be purchased from Ace Embroidery https://ais.ace-online.co.uk/catalogue. Please make sure that your child takes off any jewellery before coming into school, unless it is for religious purposes where they need to cover with a sweatband. If your child is unable to participate in PE, please send them in with a note.
PE lessons take place on:
5V - Monday
5R - Wednesday
5P -Thursday
Homework
Homework is set online every week. For Maths homework, we will be encouraging children to use Times Table Rockstars in weekly class battles as well as continuing to use Maths flex to consolidate the learning in class. We also ask that reading is done regularly at home and recorded in their reading diaries at least 2-3 times a week, these will be checked by class teacher.
The children's login details have been given out for the children to stick on to the front/ or back of their reading records for safe keeping.
Spellings
Your child will be tested on their spellings every Friday morning.
At the start of every half-term, a spelling list will be sent home with your child. Please ensure that your child learns their spellings and are tested on them at home where possible. The spellings can also be accessed on Spelling Frame, where the children can practise their weekly spellings through a range of engaging games, as well as being able to participate in mock/practice tests. Please note that the meaning and understanding of the spellings are important to the spelling test too. The children will be given the spelling in a context. Even though the children will learn and practice spellings from a set rule, the maximum spellings on a test will be 14.
Please find the link below to all of the spelling lists for the Spring term. Try to find the definition of the words and use them within a sentence, as this can help to broaden the children's vocabulary within lessons. The children will be tested on their spellings every Friday morning.
Please can you encourage and remind children to wear black school shoes to school and not trainers. Our children look so smart when they are in full school uniform and we would like the same standards for everyone.
Also, a gentle reminder that mobile phones are not permitted to be brought into school. If there is a particular reason why your child needs to bring a phone into school, please speak to the office staff as there are certain conditions that are outlined in a letter and a form needs to be signed.
For the latest up-to-date news and events please link the school calendar to your personal calendar.
